Movies Historical

Movies have come a long way since the future talking picture was made in 1927. Starring Al Jolson, and titled "The Jazz Singer", this film paved the way for most of the current endeavors enjoyed by viewers today. Hollywood originally had only a handful of production companies to make movies in the early 30's, but that all changed as technology made equipment cheaper and more readily available. As a result, movie studios continue to proliferate, with independent producers now cooperating with larger enterprises in order to get the main stream media to take notice of their efforts.

A variety of awards have been garnered for these types of studios. Perhaps the best example of this was "Rocky", made by Sylvester Stallone, a relative unknown actor at the time. He wrote and starred in this feature for the paltry sum of 1.1 million dollars. It went on to gross 117 million at the box office, making stars out of several role players such as Carl Weathers, Burt Young and Talia Shire. In addition, the movie won the Oscar for best picture in 1976.

Another independent production was "Slumdog Millionaire", released in 2008. It tells the story of a young man (Jamal Malik) from the slums of India who went on this country's version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire." After he did significantly better than expected, police officials as well as the show host became suspicious of Malik. During interrogation, flashbacks are shown of his past experiences, which help to explain how he knew some of the answers on the show. Nominated for 10 Academy Awards, it garnered 8, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

"Crash" released in 2005 was also an independent film that won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Matt Dillon). It chronicles the lives of several Los Angeles residents over a 2 day period, intertwining the lives and stories of the characters. Showing the basic human flaws that make up the entire population, this movie demonstrates the ability to forgive past indiscretions and move on with life. With several noted players such as Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Terrance Howard and Matt Dillon, it was brilliantly directed by Paul Haggis who also won for Best Director."Crash" released in 2005 was also an independent film that won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Matt Dillon). Independent films have enjoyed a long and rich history in American Culture. As long as viewers are interested, they will continue to enjoy at least a cult status in the lexicon of society.
